Vegetation roof

In modern cities, vegetation roofs are an increasingly popular architectural solution, especially in large residential projects or shopping centres. You may also come across the term green roofs, with the two names usually referring to the same thing.

What is a vegetation roof

It is a roof whose surface is covered with a layer of soil and vegetation, i.e. plants. In fact, the vegetation roof consists of several functional layers, such as:

• Waterproofing layer that prevents water from entering the structure.
• Anti-root layer that prevents roots from growing into waterproofing. 
• Drainage layer that retains and drains excess water. 
• Filter layer that prevents substrate washing out.
• Substrate that provides nutrition to plants.
• Vegetation, i.e. various types of plants that can be extensive (undemanding, such as mosses and grasses) or intensive (more demanding to maintain, such as bushes and flowers).

What are the advantages of a vegetation roof

The green roof covered with plants brings many benefits for the environment, residents and the surrounding area. The benefits include in particular:

• It fulfils the function of heat and sound insulation, creating a more pleasant environment for life.
• It retains rainwater, helping to regulate its drainage.
