Asphalt roof covering

Asphalt roofing is a modern and popular choice for many home-owners and builders due to its practical features and affordability

What is an asphalt roof

This is a type of roofing material made of asphalt (bitumen) and reinforced with other additives, such as fibreglass or organic fibres. Bituminous roofing has several layers:

  • Bottom layer – facilitates installation and improves adhesion, consists of a self-adhesive band or a sand layer.
  • Load-bearing layer – gives strength and stability to the roofing. It can be made of fibreglass or organic fibres (e.g. cellulose).
  • Asphalt layer – provides waterproofing properties. It is made of oxidized bitumen (traditional, cheaper and less flexible material) or modified bitumen (more resistant to temperatures and damage).
  • Surface layer – protects the roofing from UV radiation, increases resistance and gives an aesthetic look. It can consist of mineral granules, aluminium or copper sprinkles.

Asphalt roofing can come in various forms: asphalt shingles, asphalt bands, asphalt corrugated boards.

Advantages of asphalt roofing

When choosing this type of roof, it is necessary to consider all the advantages as well as the disadvantages of asphalt roofing.

Advantages

  • Water resistance – excellent waterproofing properties, protects against rain and snow.
  • Low weight – this lightweight roofing does not burden the roof structure.
  • Easy installation – bitumen shingles and bands are easy to lay and adjust.
  • Noise suppression – better acoustic insulation compared to sheet metal.
  • Affordable price – cheaper choice than some other roofing materials.

Disadvantages

  • Shorter service life – compared to ceramic or sheet metal roofing.
  • May overheat – in hot weather it absorbs more heat and there is a risk of overheating.
  • Susceptibility to damage – extreme conditions such as strong wind or hail can damage it.

Asphalt roofing is particularly suitable for family houses, farm buildings, but also smaller buildings such as gazebos and shelters. Although it has a shorter lifespan than traditional materials, it is a practical and affordable choice.
