Gutter

In general, the term gutter refers to a long depression, channel, groove or narrow structure used to discharge substances (liquid and bulk solids). In nature, we can find a mountain gully, in agriculture a feeding or watering trough, and in construction a gutter, drainage or concrete trough. In our context, we are specifically interested in the gutter.

What is an eaves gutter

It is a part of gutter system of the roof and its task is to collect and drain rainwater to the rain pipes (downspouts) and then away from the building. Without the gutter system, the facade, foundations, but also the land around the house would be damaged over time. The gutter is placed on the roof in a horizontal position, thanks to which water can be collected more easily.

In addition to the gutter, the drainage system also consists of:

• downspouts – have a vertical position and drain water downwards.
• elbow and fittings – connect individual parts of the system,
• gutter brackets – fix the gutter to the roof,
• dirt traps – prevent clogging of the gutter with leaves or branches.

Materials of gutters

Modern gutters are made of various types of material. Each of them has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Among the most widely used materials are:

• Galvanized steel – a traditional material that is resistant, but prone to corrosion.
• Aluminium – is lightweight, corrosion resistant, but less resistant to mechanical damage.
• Copper – is very resistant and provides an aesthetic look but is more expensive.
• Titanium zinc – a high-quality and durable material with a long service life.
• Plastic (PVC) – affordable, lightweight, non-corrosive, but less resistant to mechanical damage.

As to gutters, regardless of the material, to maintain their properties and service life, they must be regularly cleaned of dirt, checked for fastening and tightness of joints, and protected from freezing in winter.
