Roof dormer

A roof dormer can be a suitable solution, especially for attic accommodation spaces that need to be illuminated and aerated. It will thus increase the aesthetic value, functionality and comfort of living

What is a roof dormer

It is an architectural element with a window that projects from the pitched roof. In the true sense of the word, it is an over-roof structure with its own small roof, side walls and window, which can have different shapes (e.g. gable, shed, arched, ...).

Structurally, the dormer is integrated into the roof truss of the building, and its correct connection to the main roof is important from the point of view of waterproofing to prevent leakage. Usually, the dormer is a part of the construction project, but it can be built out additionally during the reconstruction of the roof.

Someone might mistake a dormer for an ordinary skylight, but there is a difference between them. By being pushed out of the building, the dormer offers a better view of the surroundings and more space. However, its implementation is more technically demanding and expensive.

What function does the dormer perform

Its main task is to illuminate and optically enlarge the interior space, especially in attic rooms. It also improves ventilation, preventing overheating and creating a more pleasant climate. Unlike classic skylights, it provides better thermal insulation.

In addition to its functional significance, the dormer also has an aesthetic role, as it can positively influence the look of the roof and the entire house. It gives character to the building, underlines the architectural style of the house and thus increases the value of the property.
